MP Abdulbasit R. Benito Pushes for Urgent Renovation of Quirino Bridge in Cotabato City

COTABATO CITY – April 8, 2025 — In a move driven by public concern and long-standing delays, Member of the Parliament Abdulbasit R. Benito of the Bangsamoro Parliament filed a resolution before the recent session break, strongly urging the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) National Office to fast-track the renovation of the aging Quirino Bridge in Cotabato City.
The resolution, filed last April, comes amid growing frustration among residents and local officials over the continued closure and worsening condition of the bridge, which has been out of service since 2019. The Quirino Bridge once served as a critical connection for communities and businesses in Cotabato City and surrounding areas. Its prolonged unavailability has disrupted daily transportation, caused severe traffic on alternative routes, and hindered economic activities.
MP Benito emphasized in his resolution that the slow progress of rehabilitation has greatly affected not just the city's economy, but also the safety and well-being of its people.
> “The Quirino Bridge is not just concrete and steel—it is a lifeline for our people,” Benito stated. “Its prolonged closure has caused inconvenience and hardship for commuters, motorists, and local businesses alike. We must act now.”
Residents have raised concerns over the burden placed on the Delta Bridge, which now carries the full load of daily traffic. Local officials have also cited risks to emergency response and delivery of goods. The stalled progress has also affected about 30 families who are set to be relocated once construction begins.
In his resolution, MP Benito called on DPWH to coordinate closely with the Cotabato City LGU and relevant agencies to resolve pending issues, including relocation assistance, to ensure that the rehabilitation can proceed without further delay.
His timely call reflects the growing urgency to restore the city’s vital infrastructure and ease the daily struggles of its people. For many Cotabateños, the bridge represents more than a route—it is a symbol of progress that has been left behind for far too long.
MP Benito’s resolution is currently awaiting action from the appropriate national offices, and residents are hopeful that it will lead to long-overdue changes on the ground.
