Cotabato City, June 18, 2025 - In a significant step toward addressing critical infrastructure needs in Cotabato City, the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) Committee on Public Works has approved a resolution authored by Member of Parliament Abdulbasit R. Benito, urging the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) - National Office to fast-track the long-overdue renovation of Quirino Bridge.
The resolution was passed during a committee meeting held at the Bangsamoro Government Center compound in Cotabato City and presided over by Committee Chair MP Jaafar Apollo Mikhail L. Matalam.
MP Benito, in his sponsorship remarks, underscored the bridge’s historical importance and its crucial role in daily commerce and public mobility. “Quirino Bridge is more than just a crossing. It is a lifeline for our communities — economically, socially, and historically,” he said. “It is our duty to act before its condition worsens and endangers lives.”
Spanning the Rio Grande de Mindanao, Quirino Bridge serves as one of the city’s main transport links, supporting the movement of people, goods, and essential services between Cotabato City and its neighboring provinces. Technical reports presented to the committee indicate that the structure is now in a deteriorating condition due to age and lack of major rehabilitation over the decades.
Benito also emphasized that the renovation is a strategic investment not only for Cotabato City but for the entire BARMM region, particularly for provinces such as Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, and North Cotabato, whose economies are closely tied to the city’s transport network.
“The people deserve safe and efficient infrastructure. This resolution is a call to action — to the national government, to the DPWH, to listen to the voices from the ground,” Benito added.
The resolution will be formally transmitted to the DPWH National Office, calling for immediate technical and financial mobilization to ensure that the bridge’s rehabilitation proceeds without delay.
Local officials and civil society organizations have echoed support for the measure, with many noting its potential to enhance economic activity, ensure public safety, and strengthen connectivity within and beyond Cotabato City.
The approval of the resolution highlights the growing influence of Bangsamoro legislators in championing development priorities and addressing urgent concerns on the ground as the region continues its transition toward stronger self-governance.
