MP Abdulbasit Benito joins committee push for urgent passage

Cotabato City, June 9, 2025 — The Bangsamoro Parliament’s Committee on Amendments, Revision, and Codification of Laws convened on Monday to expedite the review of a proposed bill seeking the reapportionment of seven (7) parliamentary seats in the province of Sulu, ahead of the first BARMM Parliamentary Elections set for October 13, 2025.
Member of Parliament Abdulbasit R. Benito was among the active participants in the meeting, voicing strong support for the immediate passage of the bill. MP Benito emphasized the urgency of ensuring fair and proportional representation for Sulu in the upcoming elections, which mark a historic milestone in the region's democratic process.
The meeting was presided over by Committee Chair MP Atty. Sittie Fahanie Uy-Uyod, who announced that full committee deliberations are scheduled for the third week of June. The committee aims to finalize its report and submit the proposed measure to the plenary before the election period formally begins.
The proposed reapportionment seeks to align parliamentary representation in Sulu with the region’s demographic and administrative realities, ensuring more balanced legislative participation across the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
The measure is expected to play a crucial role in shaping a more inclusive and representative first-ever parliamentary election under the Bangsamoro Organic Law.
