MP Abdulbasit Benito Expresses Deep Gratitude to President Marcos for Signing Philippine Islamic Burial Act into Law

COTABATO CITY, April 22 — A wave of heartfelt gratitude filled the Session hall of Bangsamoro Government Center today as Member of Parliament Abdulbasit R. Benito took the floor during the fourth regular session of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA). With sincerity in his voice and emotion in his words, MP Benito extended his deepest appreciation and heartfelt commendation to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for signing into law Republic Act No. 12160, officially known as the Philippine Islamic Burial Act.
“This is not just a law—it is a recognition of our identity, our culture, and our faith,” MP Benito said, visibly moved as he addressed his fellow parliament members. “Through this Act, the government has shown its respect for the traditions of the Muslim Filipino community, especially in the most sacred and sensitive moments of life—our farewell to the departed.”
RA 12160 ensures the timely and dignified burial of deceased Muslims in accordance with Islamic rites and customs, an issue that has long been a concern for many Muslim Filipinos, especially those living in areas without immediate access to designated Muslim cemeteries.
MP Benito highlighted how the signing of this law represents a milestone in the continuing journey toward inclusivity and understanding among diverse cultures and religions in the Philippines. He lauded President Marcos for demonstrating political will and cultural sensitivity, saying, “This act of leadership speaks volumes—it is a testament to a President who listens, who understands, and who acts.”
He also recognized the collective effort of lawmakers, Muslim leaders, and advocates who worked hand in hand to push for the legislation. “We are one step closer to a society that honors every faith equally,” Benito said. “And for that, Mr. President, we thank you.”
The session ended with a warm round of applause, not just for the speech—but for the progress it symbolized for the Bangsamoro people and for the nation as a whole.
